I have served as the audit in-charge for the entire audit process of several prominent clients, as listed below. Throughout these engagements, I was directly involved in various key responsibilities, including: developing audit plans, assessing overall risk, organizing execution plans, delegating and supervising the audit team, liaising with clients regarding arising issues, and signing off on the final audit reports.
Representative clients include:
- A subsidiary of a Japanese corporation operating in Vietnam in the field of electronic components manufacturing for a global smartphone brand, with several hundred employees and annual revenue of nearly USD 1 billion.
- A major pharmaceutical company in Vietnam specializing in Western medicine production, with approximately 500 staff and annual revenue of around VND 500 billion.
- Multiple five-star hotels and resorts managed by well-known international brands.
- A large-scale education group operating a network of schools from primary to university level, serving thousands of students.
- One of Vietnam’s leading e-commerce platforms, for which I have been involved in audits since its inception, during the phase of organizational setup, operational process development, and coordination policy establishment with key stakeholders such as suppliers, customers, and payment providers.
- A Japanese-owned enterprise engaged in wood processing for export to the Japanese market, employing around 300 staff and generating annual revenue of VND 200 billion.
- Several banks previously ranked among the top in the market, with nationwide branch networks.
- A major international hospital in Hanoi providing healthcare services under high-quality standards.
- Several non-governmental organization (NGO) projects funded by international donors such as Sida, the World Bank, and the EU.
A Large-Scale Enterprise in the Education Sector:
The client engaged an independent qualified party to perform monthly procedures, which included:
(1) verifying the validity and appropriateness of cost-related supporting documents incurred during the period,
(2) reviewing whether the responsible personnel and departments were effectively fulfilling their roles in reviewing and approving such documents, and
(3) analyzing and identifying any unusual fluctuations in revenue and expenses.
The objective of this engagement was to provide the management team with assurance over the reliability of expense documentation and to mitigate associated risks, particularly in light of the fact that senior leadership could not directly examine every transaction. Additionally, the involvement of an independent party served to reinforce compliance and discipline among staff, ensuring that internal procedures were consistently followed and preventing complacency.
I conducted a comprehensive review of the client’s internal systems and designed tailored audit procedures to address the above requirements. This service has been provided on an ongoing basis since 2010.
A Company in the Food Processing Industry:
This client engaged us to conduct a focused review of documentation and data relating to suspected fraud and material misstatements involving costs, foreign exchange differences, and product costing over previous years.
I designed customized procedures which included conducting interviews across departments, reconciling data between functions, and tracing documents back to source records to identify the root causes of discrepancies.
The client selected this service due to the lack of technical expertise within their internal team to conduct an in-depth investigation. They believed an independent review would offer a more objective and effective solution than relying solely on internal resources.
I took full responsibility for conducting special review procedures on the financial statements of various “Targets,” based on specific requirements set by the acquirer. Below are some representative cases:
- Target in the Construction Industry: The entity specialized in large-scale infrastructure projects as a principal contractor. One of the key challenges in this engagement was accurately determining receivables and payables related to partially completed work. To address this, I thoroughly examined the client’s internal execution procedures and consulted with industry specialists to gain a clear understanding of the technical aspects involved. I also performed historical data analysis and reconciliations to gather reliable audit evidence. The review results were highly appreciated by the client for their detailed findings and practical insights.
- Target in the Telecommunications Sector: The target was a group of companies providing infrastructure leasing services for the telecommunications industry. The main challenge was assessing the completeness and reasonableness of revenue recognition and the alignment of related revenues and costs. We conducted in-depth analytical procedures, which led to the identification of several irregularities. We then requested the Target to provide specific explanations for these variances. In cases where the explanations were inadequate, we performed appropriate adjustment entries to ensure the accuracy and fair presentation of the financial statements.
1. Advisory on Inventory Costing:
An FDI enterprise in the wood manufacturing industry encountered significant challenges in accurately determining the product cost for each product line. This led to distortions in reported gross profit and the valuation of finished goods inventory, ultimately affecting the accuracy of the financial statements. Despite experimenting with various costing methods, the company had not achieved satisfactory results.
After conducting a thorough review of cost accounting methodologies and analyzing the strengths and limitations of each approach, I advised the client on selecting the most appropriate method that aligned with its production model and existing data system. In addition, I supported the enterprise in adjusting its internal processes to implement the new costing method effectively and practically.
2. Accounting Training:
I have participated in organizing numerous training programs for clients on the topic: “Differences Between Vietnamese Accounting Standards (VAS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and the Roadmap to IFRS Adoption.” The training content was customized to suit specific types of businesses, helping participants clearly understand the key differences that directly impact their organizations.
As a result, companies were able to build tailored conversion plans aligned with their specific timelines and long-term financial strategies. The training programs received very positive feedback from participants and delivered practical value for subsequent IFRS transition efforts.
3. Review and Optimization of Accounting Policies and Procedures:
A leading group in the education and training sector engaged us to address the lack of consistency in cost control and cash flow management across its member institutions. Due to the decentralized nature of its network, where each school operated with its own financial and accounting practices the group faced significant challenges in centralized management.
Together with our advisory team, I conducted a full review of the existing accounting policies and procedures, highlighting misalignments with market best practices and inefficiencies related to each unit’s operational characteristics. Based on our findings, we proposed a comprehensive set of improvements and optimizations. The group highly valued our recommendations and has since successfully implemented the new standardized policies across its entire network.
1. Review of Tax Reports and Supporting Documents Prior to Tax Inspection:
The client, a garment manufacturing company, engaged us to conduct a full review of their tax reports and supporting accounting documentation ahead of a scheduled tax audit by the authorities. The company’s primary objective was to ensure maximum compliance with current tax regulations and mitigate the risk of tax reassessment, administrative penalties, or potential damage to its brand reputation.
I personally carried out a comprehensive review of the company’s tax filings (including VAT, Corporate Income Tax, Personal Income Tax, and Foreign Contractor Tax) and relevant supporting documents. I identified non-compliant areas and provided timely recommendations for corrective actions. For the client, proactively managing tax risks and maintaining a high level of compliance is considered critical to its long-term business strategy in the Vietnamese market.
2. Transfer Pricing Advisory:
I have advised numerous domestic and cross-border businesses on transfer pricing issues, helping them determine arm’s length pricing in accordance with Vietnamese tax regulations and international best practices. The scope of work included:
- Reviewing existing related-party transactions
- Analyzing potential transfer pricing risks
- Guiding the preparation of transfer pricing documentation
- Advising on appropriate pricing methods and assisting clients in developing robust defense files in anticipation of tax authority inquiries
3. In-Depth Advisory on Complex Tax Matters:
I have supported many businesses in resolving complex and sensitive issues related to the following taxes:
- Value-Added Tax (VAT)
- Corporate Income Tax (CIT)
- Personal Income Tax (PIT)
- Foreign Contractor Tax (FCT)
This advisory work often involves in-depth interpretation of regulations, practical application, and strategic planning to ensure compliance and optimize tax positions.
As a long-standing member of the Company’s Executive Board, I have accumulated extensive capabilities and deep experience in the following key areas:
- Developing and implementing annual business strategies and risk management plans: Supporting the Company in consistently achieving its strategic objectives while effectively identifying and mitigating potential risks.
- Building the Marketing Department (both digital and traditional): Equipping the function with essential capabilities to strengthen brand presence, expand market reach, and effectively engage new customer segments.
- Establishing an internal training system for the audit service team: Ensuring team members are highly aware of internal training initiatives, adhere strictly to relevant requirements, and optimize the use of training resources while maintaining effectiveness.
- Developing internal management software: Contributing to the Company’s digital transformation efforts and enhancing overall operational efficiency through tailored system solutions.
- Training and coaching senior personnel: Supporting the development of a qualified and capable leadership succession pipeline aligned with the Company’s long-term vision.
- Developing an effective recruitment support system: Enabling the organization to recruit talent who are qualified, committed, and culturally aligned—thereby supporting expansion plans without unnecessary costs or delays.
- Establishing and embedding the Company’s Core Philosophies: Helping to attract and retain personnel aligned with the Company’s growth strategy and laying a foundation for a strong corporate culture grounded in shared values.
- Developing and implementing a Quality Control System: Ensuring that the Company’s services consistently meet legal standards and deliver on commitments made to clients.
